Getting Started in Amateur Radio So you want to become a HAM? Cool! We'd love to have you join us in the WORLD'S GREATEST HOBBY. This page is under construction and links will be added; here is a basic framework of action to get you thinking. Steps to becoming a HAM RADIO OPERATOR: 1. Show interest (you found our website, que no?) 2. Study as much about the hobby as you can on the web, or in the library. 3. Find someone that can help you in your hobby. We call hams that are
willing to help beginners "Elmers". These folks are our MENTORS. Here
are two local (Front Range Colorado) groups that have a "Mentor" or Elmer
programs:
4. Study the Amateur Radio rules, buy a Ham Radio Study guide, or attend a Ham Radio class (usually sponsored by a local radio club). 5. Find out about the local VECs (Volunteer Examiner Committees) and what their testing schedule is. All Ham Radio operators are licensed by the FCC and must adhere to our rules and regulations. 6. Take that exam! They are all multiple choice and there is no longer a Morse Code requirement! 7. GET ON THE AIR and make lots of new friends! |
